Description
18" (46 cm.) Poured wax shoulderhead, tiny blue glass sleep eyes which open and close from lever at back torso, heavily-modeled eyelids, tinted brows, lips and cheeks, closed mouth, tacked-on brunette mohair wig with ringlet curls, muslin stitch-jointed body, wax lower limbs, bare feet. Condition: very good, some light typical craquelure on face. Marks: S. Austin's Toy & Doll Counter 24 Ground Floor Pantheon Bazaar (stamp on front torso). Comments: England, the doll was presented by Austin's of London, circa 1880. Value Points: the dainty doll is wearing her beautiful original lace dress, undergarments, pink kidskin slippers, and pale pink bonnet, and owns copies of two original notes identifying her simply as The London Doll as "I never had any name like the other dolls", and with provenance of ownership until its arrival at the Rosalie Whyel Museum.
