Description
28" (71 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with flat cut neck socket that accommodates to shoulderplate neck dowel, plump facial modeling of young baby, black glass enamel outlined eyes, heavy eyelids, feathered brows, closed mouth, paper mache shoulderplate and lower torso, cloth midriff and upper arms and legs, wooden lower arms and legs, paper mache hands and feet with loose baby-like jointing of wrists and ankles, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent, original finish. Comments: Germany, circa 1860, the doll was inspired by Japanese child doll that had just been introduced to Europe at the International Expositions, and is considered the forerunner of the Germany ball-jointed bisque child doll. Value Points: rare grand size, all original body with originally-designed articulation.
