Description
25" (64 cm.) Art-plaster sculpted head with sculpted casually-arranged black hair captured in chignon at back crown, painted facial features, brown painted eyes, closed mouth with intent expression, padded armature body, posable arms, posed on original wooden stand labeled with her name and 1895. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Maxine Elliott, purchased by J.H. Hoffheimer, 1937 Traphagen School (original cloth label on costume). Comments: designed by Lilli Baitz, portraying the Maine-born stage actress Maxine Elliott (1871-1940) who notably built her own New York City theatre in 1908 and once, when asked if she would remain single after two divorces said "I have no honorable intentions toward any man". Value Points: wearing peach silk taffeta gown with voluminous sleeves, trimmed with lace at cuffs and collar, adorned with aqua silk sash, bows and covered buttons. With original labeled leather travel case.
