Description
25" (64 cm.) Art-plaster sculpted head with sculpted brown hair arranged in double-chignon, painted facial features, brown side-glancing eyes, closed mouth, padded armature body, posable arms, posed on original wooden stand labeled with her name and 1865. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Helena Modjeska, purchased by J.H. Hoffheimer, 1937 Traphagen School (original cloth label on costume). Comments: designed by Lilli Baitz, portraying the Polish-born actress, Helena Modjeska (1833-1909) who immigrated to California about 1875 and earned accolades there in dramatic and comedic stage roles for several decades. Value Points: wearing green textured silk crepe ensemble with fitted jacket, pagoda sleeves, matching covered buttons, black lace trim, knitted collar and lace shawl, molded gloves. With original labeled leather case.
