Description
17" (43 cm.) Solid domed paper mache shoulderhead with oval shape face, painted complexion, painted blue outlined eyes, upper eyeliner with painted upper lashes, single stroke brows, closed mouth, defined chin, simple wooden form body with tiny waist, unjointed legs with flat feet, cloth upper arms, carved wooden fork-like hands. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: English, circa 1690, the doll was acquired from the Bodmer Collection which had previously obtained the doll from the auction of the English family of Cockerell, also owners of the famous Lord and Lady Clapham dolls. Value Points: wonderful state of preservation both of doll and costume, her hair in elaborate up-sweep beneath an elaborate "fontage" headpiece with lappets, and with red and white dotted yellow silk robe having metallic silver stomacher. The doll is featured in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, page 19.
