Description
21" (53 cm.) All-cloth doll with deeply pressed and oil-painted facial features, especially deeply-defined eye sockets, large blue painted eyes with brown upper eyeliner, white eye dots, closed mouth with downcast shaded lips, blushed ears and cheeks, painted brown hair with shaded details, stockinette stitch-jointed body, oil-painted hands and lower legs, stitched fingers and toes, antique schoolboy coat with double collar, black kidskin ankle boots. Condition: very good, some typical paint wear, torso and upper limbs recovered with old brown muslin. Comments: American, circa 1890, the doll was sold by the J.B. Sheppard Department Store of Philadelphia. Value Points: very appealing wide-eyed child doll with artistically modeled and painted features having very expressive look. The doll is featured in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, page 71.
