Description
19" (48 cm.) Bisque socket head with ebony black matte complexion and highly characterized features, brown glass inset eyes, mohair lashes, black feathered brows with modeling details, closed mouth with downcast coral painted lips, pierced ears, black mohair wig, black composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique silk gentleman's costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 8 1/2 1301 Dep S&H. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1900, from a series of 1300 character dolls, a companion to #403 of this catalog which is model 1301. Value Points: extraordinary detail of sculpting of stern-faced gentleman, with details of frown lines on forehead, prominent cheek bones, strong jaw and chin lines, defined indentations at lip corners and philtrum, superb quality of bisque. The doll is featured in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, page 218.
