Description
14" (36 cm.) Bisque socket head depicting a young child with sculpted blonde curly hair peeking from beneath a sculpted bonnet, small blue glass eyes, painted curly lashes, short feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, outlined lips with enhancing decorative glaze, two porcelain upper teeth, composition and wooden toddler body with side-hip jointing, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: JDK Made in Germany. Comments: Kestner, circa 1914, who transformed their classic facial model into an extraordinary model with sculpted hair and bonnet. Value Points: extremely rare doll, of which few examples are known to exist, the bisque and painting are superb, and the sculpting of the bonnet includes "ruffled" border, painted blue ribbon band with incised "embroidery" in an intricate star pattern which extends to back of cap. The doll is featured in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, pp. 192/193.
