17" (43 cm.) Bisque socket head, small brown glass sleep eyes, mohair lashes, thick dark upper eyeliner, delicately-painted lashes, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with shaded lips, unpierced ears, blonde mohair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique costume, undergarments, socks and shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 120 3. Comments: Germany, circa 1910, from a series of 120 model dolls whose definitive maker remains a mystery. Value Points: most endearing expression of the very rare closed mouth doll, finest bisque and painting, original body and body finish. The doll is featured in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, pp. 191/193.
