German Felt Character "Golliwog" by Steiff

14" (35 cm.) All-felt doll with firmly-pressed black felt swivel head, stitched-on felt eyes with black bead centers, shaped nose, stitched mouth and teeth, black mohair stitched-on wig, firmly-stuffed body with plump torso, disc-jointed arms and legs, the costume of red felt trousers, white shirt front, blue jacket, and with black leather laced boots. Condition: structurally excellent, one small tear at back lower jacket, head excellent, jacket and shirt dusty, finish on boots worn. Marks: Steiff (original button in ear). Comments: Steiff, the Golliwog model, based upon the illustrations in Florence Kate Upton's storybooks, was produced by Steiff in seven sizes between 1909-1919. Value Points: rare early Steiff character with imaginative details.
