Description
16" (41 cm.) Each is of pressed felt with swivel head, painted facial features, mohair wig, firm cloth body with jointing at shoulders and hips, and each is wearing intricately-detailed traditional folk costume of Hungarian regions. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: from the studio workshop of Margit Szerelemhegyi ("Marga") of Budapest, likely presented at the 1939 New York World's Fair according to the Museum, which acquired the dolls from their original owner who had preserved them since that time. Each doll has a special feature indicative of its region, and each is notable for outstanding detail of construction including coiffe, footwear and accessories. Value Points: the artist-made cloth dolls, nearing their century mark, are remarkably store-fresh. The dolls are featured and discussed in the book, The Rose Unfolds, by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, page 81.
