Description
20" (51 cm.) (l. with extended tail. 6"l. without tail. 18"h. with tail). Hidden inside the torso of the paper-mache bodied peacock is a clockwork mechanism, which, when wound, causes the peacock to strut realistically, turning his head to the side and back, ruffling torso feathers, and then lifting his tail feathers and rhythmically opening and closing them in an expansive fan; the peacock has glass eyes, metal legs and stand, paper mache beak, and is lavishly covered with real peacock feathers over torso and head, and a lavish fan of peacock feathers at the back. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890, a companion to the following lot, with variation in feather decoration. Value Points: splendid majesty of the mechanical toy which is wonderfully preserved.
