Description
12" (30 cm.) Each has carton-pressed head with sculpted grey hair, painted facial features depicting aged man and woman with incised age lines, paper-wrapped armature torso and upper legs, paper mache hands and lower legs, each posed standing upon wooden base. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, mid-1800s, their armature bodies have 1854 dates on newspaper wrap. Value Points: each wearing original costume of French country people during post-Revolution days, the man with fine leather leggings, smock, bi-corn hat with emblem. The dolls are shown in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer, page 223.
