Description
9" (23 cm.) Bisque socket head with earliest bebe facial model, large brown paperweight eyes, light eyeliner and delicate lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center line between the lines forming into upturning lip corners as though a gentle smile, pierced ears, original blonde lambswool wig with interwoven hair ribbon, wooden button neck attachment, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with straight wrists, slightly cupped hands. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: N (incised at crown rim) 1 (head) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1878, his first period bebe. Value Points: perfectly preserved, the precious tiny bebe has original wig, body, body finish, earrings, muslin chemise, and presented in rare early box with early lid label indicating that the doll was sold "nu" (i.e. in chemise) and providing variable historical indication that the early dressed dolls bore a special Jumeau insignia on their dust ruffle. The doll appears in the book, The Beautiful Jumeau, by Florence Theriault, 1997.

Stuart's Take

She may be petite, but what a giant presence. Perhaps one of my favorite small Jumeau bebes over the years that was originally obtained by Mrs, Nievergelt at one of our past auctions and featured in the book, The Beautiful Jumeau. The originality is astounding and it's uncanny that even when looking at it amongst 100 larger bebes it stands out and grabs your eye immediately.
