Description
25" (64 cm.) Brown cotton sateen folk doll has rounded facial shape with applied nose and defined nostrils, red cotton applique lips, applique white felt eyes with black embroidered outlines to suggest lashes, black shoe-button eyes, black embroidered brows, applique ears with attached earrings, black yarn hair, brown cotton sateen body with stitch-jointing at shoulders and hips. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: American, circa 1900, the doll was acquired from the estate of the wealthy John Pepper Norris of main line family of Philadelphia; family history indicates the doll was that of "Virginia" (no last name known), the family cook who appears in a photo of family members which is included with the doll. Value Points: impeccably preserved and most imaginative in construction details, Virginia is wearing her original costume comprising cotton print blouse with unusual detail of mending on one sleeve, red flannel petticoat, red cotton skirt, pantalets, stockings, brown leather shoes, pocket apron and red scarf.
