18" (46 cm.) doll. 20" cradle. The carved wooden one-piece poupard with gesso and polychrome finish has exceptional detail of carving, including incised brush marks on hair, defined ears, well-defined eye sockets with painted brown eyes, carved open mouth, tinted brows; and with body shaped as though wrapped in a bunting. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Italian, 1700s. Value Points: exceptionally fine state of original preservation, with richly carved and painted costume details and facial features; the doll is presented in original wooden cradle with original paint; a note included in the cradle indicates provenance from the Bodmer Collection.
