Description
16" (41 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead with richest brown complexion, sculpted greying hair in tight curls, deeply-incised age wrinkles, broad nose, closed mouth, tow-wrapped armature posable body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, bare feet, wearing twill tunic and embroidered vest, harem style short pants, woven sash enclosing silver sabre, and holding the leash of his performing earthenware monkey with enamel eyes, curled tail. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Neapolitan, mid-1700s. Value Points: the outstanding modeling, including greying of hair, age wrinkles and muscular ankles and feet, indicates creation by celebrated unidentified sculptor. Ex-collection Hanne Buktas.
