Description
15" (38 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead with rich ebony complexion, sculpted short hair with very tight curls, sculpted ears, inset enamel eyes, open mouth with row of teeth and modeled tongue, well-defined cheek and throat creases, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs with ebony finish, bare feet, wearing original silk and homespun costume and carrying wooden-handled spear, silver-handled sabre, and with silver jug. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Neapolitan, mid-1700s, attributed to Lorenzo Mosca, whose other works are included in the noted Bordoni Collection of Bologna and the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum of Munich. Value Points: outstanding artistry including highly-individualized facial expression. Ex-Collection Hanne Buktas.
