18" (46 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head, sculpted short black curly hair, ruddy complexion, enamel eyes in deeply-set sockets, defined cheeks, strong nose, closed mouth with kind slight smile, painted beard stubble, tow-wrapped posable armature body with carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted wrinkled leggings, black shoes with red buckles, wearing original costume comprising cotton shirt, brown velvet pants, burgundy lined jacket, apron, cap and carrying a tied rabbit. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, early 1700s, attributed to Matteo Bottigliero, considered one of the leading sculptors, not only of presipio, but also of wood and silver statuary, in the early years of the that century.
