Description
15" (38 cm.) All wooden doll with one-piece head and torso, heart-shaped face, elongated throat, black painted hair with shaded tendrils of curls framing the forehead and with sculpted yellow tuck comb at her crown, painted facial features, outlined eyes, single stroke brows, closed mouth, peg-jointing of limbs. Condition: original finish and structurally excellent, some very faint typical craquelure. Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1830. Value Points: presented in original glass-front wooden dowel-jointed box, the doll is wearing original high-waisted silk gown with lace and silk ribbon trim, matching bonnet and is holding a hand-blown Bristol glass smelling salts flask. The doll was featured in the book The Rose Unfolds by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, page 13, described as "totally original state nearly 200 years later."
