Description
16" (41 cm.) Each has bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, black glass inset eyes, painted black brows and lashes, pierced ears, black fleecy wig over cork pate, French brown kid leather poupee body with gusset-jointing at hips, knees and elbows. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F. 3 G. Comments: Gaultier, circa 1880, the dolls are wearing matching coral velvet 1906 era costumes in the cakewalk manner with fancy embellishments, he with top hat and she with wide-brimmed bonnet. The dolls appeared in the 1968 book Dimples and Sawdust and later in the celebrated early collection of Gladys Hilsdorf before arriving at the Museum.
