Description
28" (71 cm.) l. 7" shoulder width. Of very fine bronze-golden silk with embroidered floral designs, the fully linen-lined gown features a fitted bodice with bone-shaped lacing at the back, fitted upper sleeves with fan-shaped pleated edging, ribbons-edged lappets around the bodice edge, full skirt with flat front panel and graduated width pleating all around. Along with a pair of silk brocade slippers with leather soles and flat heels. Excellent condition of gown, slippers have some wear. Late 18th century. The gown and slippers are shown in the book The Heart of the Tree by Rosalie Whyel and Jill Gorman, page 96.

This is one of those early costumes that, honestly, doesn't even need a doll to be appreciated. On display solely as its own work of art would be enough for any enthusiast of early textiles.
Some more research on this in the past days has this now associated with creation in the famed weaving enclave of Spitalfields in London. It was here in the late 17th century that French Huguenots fled persecution in France and brought with them their rich history of silk weaving, creating many of the most important costumes in history,
