Description
15" (38 cm.) One-piece carved wooden head and torso appearing as an "elegante" woman of the court, but with the body of a male hidden under her lady costume, sculpted horizontal rolled curls at sides and back of hair under attached high pouf cap, deeply-defined sculpted eye sockets, painted blue eyes, tinted brows and small closed mouth, wooden arms and legs with loose pin-jointing, painted red stockings, painted blue shoes. Condition: very good, original finish albeit darkened. Comments: French from the Poupees Royale series, the hermaphrodite model is described in the Theimer book Poupees Royale as "a courtisan deguise en femme" (a courtier disguised as a woman) (shown in detail pages 84-86) and is featured in the book The Rose Unfolds by Rosalie Whyel and Susan Hedrick, page 15.
