Description
24" (61 cm.) All-cloth doll with rich sienna brown oil-painted complexion which extends over the entire body, pressed facial features, stitched-on ears, black painted hair with feathered detailing around the forehead, painted outlined brown eyes, black upper eyeliner and brows, closed mouth, weighted body with stitch-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Martha Chase, the weighted hospital baby, designed for training of young nurses, circa 1910. Value Points: very rare doll, the only example known with distinctive Native American tinted complexion which is all original and wonderfully-preserved. According to Rosalie Whyel Museum records, the doll was commissioned by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Hospital.
