Description
25" (64 cm.) Poured wax shoulderhead with black complexion, very expressive and distinctive facial features, brown glass inset eyes, incised detail of eyeliner, tinted brows, broad nose, high cheek bones and very full cheeks, closed mouth with expressive lips, black wig, straw-filled handmade cloth body, painted black hand-stitched hands, wearing original old and faded red muslin dress and lace cap. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: maker is unknown, likely American, circa 1860s, the doll bears resemblance to Topsy character from Uncle Tom's Cabin published during that time. Value Points: exceptional detail of modeling and its singular expression are most notable, the complexion with very fine original gleaming finish; the mystery background of the doll adds to its appeal.
