Description
9" (23 cm.) Padded cotton crepe fabric over copper-wire armature, press-shaped facial features with well-defined chin point, painted facial details, small blue eyes, brown silk thread hair under black velvet coiffe with elaborate beading, closed mouth, separately-sculpted fingers designed to hold objects. Marks: Dorothy Wendell Heizer (cloth label inside costume). Condition: excellent. Comments: by the NIADA artist Dorothy Heizer, circa 1950, depicting Queen Mary 1 of England (also known as Mary Tudor and Bloody Mary), the daughter of King Henry the VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Value Points: the face designed to gaze gently to the side, the doll is wearing black velvet gown over patterned silk brocade skirt and sleeves, high silk collar, bead-edged emerald jewelry, carrying flowers and gloves, and with embroidered slippers, undergarments, silk stockings.
