18" (46 cm.) Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, painted lower lashes, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, soft blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, composition and wooden ball-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 6 1/2 made in Germany 7 1/2 171 (head) Germany 7 1/2 (body) Kestner Jointed Doll (box label) Crown Doll Kestner (paper label on chemise). Comments: Kestner, circa 1911, the 171 model in this particular size was introduced in the March 15, 1911 issue of Ladies' Home Journal as Daisy, "The Doll That Has Come to Life", inspired by their popular Lettie Lane paper doll. The issue told young girls how they could obtain the doll along with patterns for all of the costumes shown: just obtain three subscriptions for the magazine and send along with $4.50. The promotion was immensely popular, and for many months the doll continued to be offered "in her party clothes", "in her school clothes", "as a bride", and more. Value Points: in pristine unplayed with condition, in original box, with original chemise; included are 1911 Ladies' Home Journal magazines with color illustrations of the doll.
