Description
11" (28 cm.) doll head and torso. Carved wooden shoulderhead and lower torso, wrapped midriff, sculpted hair with rolled curls at the sides above sculpted pierced ears, carved triple-tiered bow at the back ponytail, carved definition of unpainted facial features, sexed masculine figure, wooden arms with metal pin jointing at shoulders and elbows. Condition: structurally excellent, there are no legs. Comments: from a series of French court dolls, late 1700s, the doll appears in the book Les Poupees Royale by Francois Theimer, pages 96/97, described as L'Homme a la Boucle d'Oreille (The man with the Ring in Ear), a tradition of costume indicating a military man. Value Points: the rare doll is wearing (very frail) original costume including silk striped pants and matching lined jacket, lace jabot, and embroidered vest; a gold earring dangles from his right ear.
