Description
9" (23 cm.) x 7" x 5". A wooden-cased sewing necessaire with tortoise-shell veneer in an elaborate fan-shaped pattern on the lid, has lion's head handles, talon feet enclosing gilded balls and opens to an exceptional interior of intricately arranged silk, with many separate compartments having tortoise or bone lids, and containing many silver and bone sewing implements. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: early 19th century, a silver label on the lid of the box is inscribed "C. Sumner 1815" in elaborately scrolled letters. Value Points: superb luxury sewing box with intriguing hint of its provenance.
