Description
12" (30 cm.) Poured honey-toned wax shoulderhead, blue glass inset eyes with all-around eyeliner and defined brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with tiny tongue tip and two tiny painted upper teeth, curly light brown mohair wig, cloth torso and arms, wax hands, painted wax ankle boots. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: English, mid-1700s, a similar group of wax dolls, mostly 12", were costumed by Laetitia Clark Powell of London in the late 1700s representing fashionable costumes of the era, made from fabric of her own clothing, and housed today in the Victoria and Albert Museum, a gift of the Powell family. It is possible, but not certain, that this is another example of that group. Value Points: exceptionally rare and wonderfully preserved, the doll wearing her original gown of figured coral silk with hand-stitched embroidery and wired metallic trim, simple cotton petticoats, attached coin purse and tricorn wool bonnet with silk rosette.
