Description
5 1/4" (13 cm.) One-piece all-bisque figure of Kewpie soldier standing alongside a Red Cross nurse, the two gazing tenderly at each other. Kewpie has side-glancing large eyes, blue wings and a sculpted helmet and uniform with brown belt and boots; he carries a cane in his right arm, and his left arm is wrapped in a sling. The nurse in white uniform with Red Cross logo, matching cap, and blue apron has her arm around his back in support. Condition: generally excellent, imperceptible re-attachment of finial to helmet. Marks: Kewpie Hero (paper shield label on front torso) O'Neill (incised on feet) Rose O'Neill Copyright (paper label on back torso). Comments: Germany, circa 1915, designed by Rose O'Neill, from a series of "Kewpie Hero" figures; another example has been found with blue sailor cap and Kewpie Hero paper label. Value Points: extremely rare Kewpie with outstanding sculpting and design.
