Of carved bone, the toy depicts an acrobat standing at balancing bar, his hands clasping the bar which is designed to turn back and forth causing the acrobat to perform various balancing acts; bone-dowel-jointing at shoulders, hips and knees allows infinite fluidity in the beautifully-designed miniature which is enhanced further by detailed sculpting of costume. Excellent condition. Japan, mid-1800s.
