5" (13 cm.) The clay figure of a cat is covered in gofun with painted details including diamond shaped yellow eyes, whiskers and spotted ears, and is depicted grasping a red tai sea bream in its mouth with its right paw resting on the base of the sea bream tail fin. Soiling of finish, loss of pigment. Meiji Era, circa 1900. Maneki-neko have long been popular symbols in Japan welcoming in good luck and fortune; in this instance the iconic form is paired with a giant sea bream which is typically associated with Ebisu the god of daily provision and a New Year's symbol of good fortune.
