Description
24" (61 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a tall slender-bodied man with sharply-featured bisque head, ebony black complexion, brown glass inset eyes, black painted brows, strong nose, slightly-parted full lips, black fleecy wig, carton torso and legs in posed stance, wire upper arms, black bisque lower arms. He is wearing silk costume comprising ruffled-edge pants, plaid jacket, red shoes with pom-poms and textured turban, and is holding a wooden teapot in one hand, and a tray with cups and saucers, sugar and creamer in his other hand. When wound, music plays and he nods and turns his head, then lifts the tray toward the teapot, then lifts the teapot as though to pour tea into one of the cups. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: L.B. (key) No 11 (head). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1885, a rare variation of the beloved "Russian Tea Server", the bisque head a special commission from Jumeau. Value Points: uniquely sculpted facial model for this rare automaton, has flawless ebony complexion, and realistic movements.
