Description
20" (51 cm.) Standing upon a green velvet covered base with ball fringe is a bisque head child with highly-characterized face depicting a crying child with narrow squinting inset glass eyes, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, teardrop, shaded nostrils, closed mouth modeled as though wide open in crying expression, modeled tongue and teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing rose silk party dress with lace and sequin trim, lime-green silk ribbons, and rose silk shoes with little bows. In her left hand she holds a hankie, while dangling from her right hand is her Polichinelle doll in classic costume. When wound, music plays, and she alternately lifts her left arm as though to dab the tears in her eyes, and then tries to lift her fallen Polichinelle, her head turning side to side and nodding. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 211 Depose Tete Jumeau 4 (doll) L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, with specially commissioned bisque head from Jumeau's Series Fantastique, circa 1890. Value Points: the rarity of the luxury automaton, which functions beautifully and with strong music is further enhanced by superb state of preservation, luxurious original costume, wig and accessories, delightful modeling with choice bisque and painting.
