20" (51 cm.) Bisque shoulderhead with very plump face, brilliant cobalt blue glass eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, firmly-stuffed muslin body with stitch-jointing, kid arms with stitched and separated fingers, fine early dress, undergarments, caps and leather boots. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: E 8 Depose B. Comments: French, Barrois, circa 1860, attached to the doll is a handwritten note indicating that the doll once belonged to Mrs. Frank Dobb of Boston, an early member of Doll Collectors of America, and at the estate sale of her dolls in the 1960s was sold to Lorna Lieberman; the doll is shown in the book The Art of Dolls by Madeline Merrill, page 199. Value Points: especially beautiful doll with delicate complexion contrasting the brilliant eyes, original body and lovely costume.
