Description
15" (38 cm.) including flag. The painted tin elevator tower has embossed shingled roof with gilt flag, tin spectator cars that move up and down the tower shaft on metal rods when the handle at the side is turned. At the spectator level of the tower there is a walk-way around the frame, protected by a lattice fence with gold railing. Six paper-mache spectators sit in the cabins. Condition: generally excellent, all original finish with some light paint flaking at base. Comments: Doll et Cie,founded by Peter Doll in 1898; the firm was fascinated with the use of steam engines as well as the new inventions of the late 20th century, including the 1893 Ferris Wheel (see #462) and the elevator, made famous at the Eiffel Tower of the 1889 World Fair in Paris. The toy operates by hand-winding the side wheel, but was also designed to operate with the firm's toy steam engines. Value Points: very rare toy,beautifully-preserved,with historical significance.
