“I took a towel, wrapped a potato into it…and filled the body with sand. The face was made by primitive lines upon the potato head, drawn by burnt-off matches.” Those were the words of Kathe Kruse in an article in Ladies Home Journal of November 1912. The potato was soon replaced by a soft-filled sock, then evolving into the cherished cloth doll beloved by children everywhere. And, so, it was with other dollmakers of the time, whether their choice was working with cloth or wood.
Because what they began with was what was on hand.
