French Paper Mache Automaton "Bob and His Learned Piglet" by Vichy

French Paper Mache Automaton "Bob and His Learned Piglet" by Vichy

Lot #26

50" (127 cm.) overall. 13" Piglet. Seated upon the top rung of a ladder-back chair is a paper mache clown with painted clown features and original wig, with glass eyes and hinged jaw, carton torso, legs and hands. The chair is arranged atop a platform stage and the clown balances a ladder on his left leg upon which is balanced,at the very top,a paper mache piglet dressed in fancy clothes, the piglet with hinged ears and a very pleased expression on his painted features. When wound,a very complicated series of movements occur in various synchronized movements: the clown blinks his eyes and opens and closes his mouth, his shoulders move back and forth and then heave, his arms move from side to side as though preparing to catch the pig,and his foot now and again taps in time to the actions. Meanwhile the piglet performs his "learned tricks": he stands upside-down,at first balancing on two feet, then on one foot, then swivels to be directly in front of the clown, occasionally wiggling his ears in delight and kicking his hind legs back and forth in the air, while periodically the ladder tilts dangerously to and fro. Meanwhile, four tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function perfectly and for extended time. Comments: Vichy, circa 1880,the model appeared in an early catalog of the firm, named "Bob et Son Cochon Savant" (Bob and His Learned Piglet),and was described as being a deposed model by the firm. Value Points: extremely rare, only three other examples are known to exist. Bob and the Piglet have original costumes,as is the mechanism and the music, thus the rarity of the piece is rivaled by its creative and delightful presentation.

Over her carton torso she is wearing her original embroidered silk kimono costume with rich embroidery including a large and elegant crane, various under-layers,sash,and silk slippers. She is carrying a very large wooden handled paper parasol of unique design to this automaton,a paper mache mask in her hand, and a lacquered tray on which are displayed other paper-mache masks that she presents for sale. The movements are intricate: the lady pivots her head, raising and lowering her eyelids, while gracefully twirling the parasol between her fingers and occasionally lifting the mask to cover her face and then lowering it again. There are two tunes that accompany the music. Condition: generally excellent, music and motions function perfectly. Comments: Gustave Vichy,Paris, circa 1889,the model was presented in the Vichy catalog as model #448 named "Marchande de Masques" although commonly known as the "Japanese Lady Mask Seller". The model was deposed by Vichy and bears the original Vichy trademark lever and key. So important was this automaton that it was described in an 1892 article in the journal La Nature, and this particular example was photographed in the book,Les Automates by Eliane Margot. Value Points: remarkable state of preservation, with superb original costume, tray, hanging masks and even extremely rare original parasol, unique to this automaton, functioning beautifully. Unique French Child Artist Mannequin with Renoir Provenance

Unique French Child Artist Mannequin with Renoir Provenance

Lot #66

42" (107 cm.) One-piece paper mache head, torso and legs, with hand-pressed details of facial modeling, the head posed turned slightly to the side and upward tilted, with unusual very deep eye sculpting lending a dimensional effect that is enhanced by dark shaded painting, grey eye shadow, brown eyeliner and shaded brows, accented nostrils of small rounded nose, closed mouth with solemn expression, wooden upper arms designed for articulation at the shoulders and elbows, paper mache lower arms with fingers posed for holding articles, the right leg with cast iron hinging mechanism in the knee to allow articulation, the right leg with hole in sole for placement on display floor dowel, with painted blue stockings and black one-strap shoes. The figure is wearing brown woolen coat with wide handmade cotton lace collar and cuffs, grey silk dress with lace bodice, undergarments,a lavishly feathered cap,and carries a wooden-handled black parasol. Provenance: It is generally acknowledged that the Impressionist artist,Pierre Auguste Renoir, used child mannequins as models in his studio, finding that live child models were simply too restless. The mannequin presented here is believed to be the actual model that appears as the young child with hoop in his painting,The Umbrellas, based upon the exceptional quality of sculpting (especially of the eyes) indicating its unique creation under specific directions, and upon its uncanny facial resemblance to the child in the painting. In addition, although its costume is identical to the child in the Umbrellas painting,it is also believed that the same mannequin, with different costuming, was used by Renoir in the paintings Two Sisters and Girl with a Watering Can. Equally compelling is the oral information concerning the background of the piece. It was acquired directly from Renoir in his later years by Bernard Davis,a Russian-born American who had parlayed his textile-made fortune into a collection of modern French art and who served as patron to many of those artists,in particular befriending Renoir. Later,in 1959 Davis opened his Museum of Modern Art in Miami, featuring the mannequin therein. After his death, the contents of his museum were sold and the mannequin acquired by a private collector in whose family's hands it has remained until this time. During the past 30 years the mannequin has been featured in special exhibitions of Impressionist art at the Kimball Museum in Texas and the Chrysler Museum in Virginia, among others (documents relating to these exhibits are included).

In Volume I of La Poupee Modele the doll was described as "our masterpiece, the jewel of our Etrennes with a refined head like the bisque of Sevres, the opulent blonde curls half-hidden by a batiste bonnet that can barely contain them, vibrant sapphire eyes, wild rose tint of complexion". Value Points: in utterly-perfect state of preservation, including bisque, body and original wig,the doll is presented with her original worn box with its original store label (see photo) along with a pristine original trousseau comprising royal blue wool two-piece seaside ensemble with feather-stitch embroidery along with matching belt,hand-stitched slippers and brown oilskin bathing cap with matching embroidery; ensemble including bustle-back grey skirt with white blouse, silk tunic, woven black hat with silk streamers, and grey oilskin purse with black fabric edging and matching belt; brown leather boots signed C.C.,brown leather shoes, paisley coach wrap with leather carrying straps, matching chemisette and chemise, petticoat, batiste bonnet,red-edged laced corset, red hooped bustle back, and hand-stitched linen slippers with red edging and feather-stitch trim. Automaton "A La Renomme" with Lottery Wheel for Au Nain Bleu

Lot #181

20" (51 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered platform is a bisque head doll with large brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, pierced ears, auburn mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque lower arms, wearing (worn) original red and green silk jacket, black pantaloons, silk apron, holding a wooden baton in one hand and appearing to carry a wooden lidded barrel from gold cords around his neck (actually attached to protruding rods from his torso). The barrel has gold lettering "A La Renomme". Condition: generally excellent, two fingers broken, music and mechanism function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 4 (head) L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890,Comments: the automaton depicts the "marchand d'envies" (merchant of wishes),a popular entertainment of the time at parks such as Jardin de Luxembourg; for a few cents children could ask the marchand to twirl the lottery wheel, and where it landed would decide what prize the child would win . Value Points: very rare model with original L.B. paper tune label indicating "La Grosse Caisse" tune and original Au Nain Bleu paper label. As the automaton did not appear in the Lambert catalog it is likely that it was a special commission for Au Nain Bleu, commemorating a child's joyful memory.
