22" (56 cm.) Bisque socket head with highly-artistic sculpting achieved by a unique four-part mold used only for this doll,heart-shaped face with elongated slender throat,pronounced definition of facial planes especially temple,cheeks and chin line,softly-rounded nose tip,blue glass paperweight eyes with spiral threading and darker blue outer rims,thick dark eyeliner,painted dark curly lashes,brush-stroked and feathered brows,accented eye corners,shaded nostrils,closed mouth with petulantly- shaped outlined lips,well-modeled pierced ears,blonde mohair softly-curled wig,original uniquely modeled body with elongated tapered-shape torso,wide hips,undefined waist,composition upper arms,bisque lower arms with bisque attached-ball-joints at the elbows,separately sculpted fingers,wide upper thighs,elongated lower legs with shapely calves,elongated narrow feet. Condition: generally excellent,left baby finger cleanly reglued at base. Marks: A. Marque (incised signature) 23 (inscribed number on head) Comments: France,circa 1916,the artistic doll was sculpted by the esteemed French artist,Albert Marque,for an exclusive exhibition that was to be presented by Parisian art patron,Margaine-Lacroix in her fashion boutique. The body was exclusively designed for this art doll by Aristodeme Botta who aimed to create a child's body for a doll that "combined the strength and grace typical of that age". It is believed that only 100 models of the Marque doll were created,most inscribed with their particular number in the series,this being #23. Value Points: outstanding beauty of this particular model,with exceptionally fine sculpting detail allowing full expression of the artist's design,very choice delicate bisque and subtle painting,original custom body,and wearing antique silk dress,and lace bonnet that may be original,and muslin chemise and black shoes imprinted with full figure of a doll and "10" that are original.

Pressed bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate with modeled bosom and shoulder blades,brown glass paperweight inset eyes,thick dark eyeliner,painted lashes,rose blushed eye shadow,painted lashes,brush-stroked and multi-feathered brows,accented eye corners,shaded nostrils,slightly-parted richly shaded lips,firmly-stuffed kid bebe body with kid-over-wood upper arms,bisque forearms with separately sculpted fingers,bisque lower legs from the knees,bisque bare feet sculpted with hole at bottom for food to fall through trap-door shoes. Condition: generally excellent,back of tongue missing that allows biscuit to slide into torso metal funnel. Marks: (circle dot symbol on head) 1 T (shoulder) (original Bru paper label on torso). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru,the "Bebe Gourmand" was first advertised by him in 1882,described as "delicieux bebe a surprise". The bebe has two hollow tin tubes or funnels leading from the upper torso into each leg through which the biscuit could be "digested",then finally falling through the trap door of the unique shoes custom-designed by Bru to accommodate the "surprise". Value Points: exceptionally fine condition and beauty of the very rare Bru bebe model with perfect bisque throughout,very sturdy body with exquisite sculpting of plump bisque legs and bisque hands,wearing antique rose and ivory silk dress and bonnet,and beautifully-preserved original leather "trap- door" Bru shoes labeled with script oval insignia "B".

14" (36 cm.) and 16". Each has carved wooden socket head with sculpted and painted hair,sculpted facial features,all wooden spring-jointed body. Included is the Bride,model 101,very cheerful expression,brown upper- glancing painted eyes,white eyedots,closed mouth with painted row of teeth,and sculpted short brown bobbed hair with painted pink hair bow,wearing white cotton wedding dress with veil and bouquet,matching undergarments and original Schoenhut shoes with grommet-edged holes in the soles. And the Groom,model 16/201,with blue painted eyes,solemn expression,closed mouth,and with short sculpted side-parted hair with deep combmarks,wooden spring-jointed body,and wearing antique family-made black cotton tails and pants,white shirt with black tie,and with original black Schoenhut shoes with grommet-edged holes in the soles. Condition: generally excellent,original finish except early discreetly-added painted lashes,nickel-sized paint flake at back of his hair. Comments: Schoenhut,circa 1915. The dolls had been in the care of Elmeta Davis of Kansas,on display in her Sunday School classroom,until her retirement to New Mexico where they passed onto a family friend in whose care they have remained since. It is believed that Elmeta Davis was the original owner. Value Points: two rare Schoenhut models,with wonderful expressions that capture their about-to-be-married mood,and having original family costumes.
