German Wood Dollhouse on the Cover of The Genius of Moritz Gottschalk

Lot #89

28" (71 cm.) h. (including chimneys) x 28"l. x 19"d. The wooden two story dollhouse is a confection of delightful architectural details from the high point of Victorian excess, known as "ginger bread trim". The front features a projecting center section with a second floor section that projects even further. The center is flanked by two front porches with set-in steps and,highly-carved columns and balustrades that lead to arched front windows and doors with carved frames. The porch roofs form into second-floor balconies with fancy balustrades, and there is an elaborate center gable with fretwork trim and two double-pot chimneys. Each side of the house has a projecting second floor gable window and elaborately framed arched windows on the first floor. The house sits upon an original wooden base, and an unusual metal hinge at the front base allows the house to open wide,or one side at a time, and has original lithographed paper cover to simulate yellow brick, and blue painted roof. The interior has two large and two small rooms with opening doors and a staircase with railing. The wall and floor papers are original and fancily designed with borders. Original curtains hang at all but two of the windows. As found condition, the house is wonderfully original albeit with worn and rubbed finish on paper and paint. Germany,Moritz Gottschalk,late-19th century, one of the most charming and fanciful creations by the firm, the house is featured on the cover of Ackerman's seminal book,The Genius of Moritz Gottschalk.
