8" (20 cm.) Comprising portrait figure of Teddy Roosevelt with painted hair and facial features including spectacles and drooping moustache to depict the 26th president, wooden body with articulation at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees and separately defined thumbs, wearing original khaki uniform with belt, ammunition box, gun and rifle, painted brown stockings and brown shoes, and having yellow wooden cap; along with brown- complexioned Native Guide with musculature carved torso, leather ears, wearing original printed cotton pants; and with ten animals, viz: alligator with glass eyes (one flipper replaced); Arabian one-humped camel with glass eyes and closed mouth; giraffe with painted eyes and carved open mouth; leopard with glass eyes and open mouth; lion with cloth mane, ball-jointed neck, glass eyes and open mouth; style III ostrich; rhinoceros with glass eyes and horn; tiger with glass eyes and open mouth; zebra with glass eyes and closed mouth; and zebu with glass eyes. Condition: very good to excellent throughout, Teddy has paint flakes on back of hair (under cap). Comments: the Teddy Roosevelt Safari Set was introduced by Schoenhut in December 1909; in her book Under the Big Top, Evelyn Ackerman described the Teddy Roosevelt figure as "having a superb likeness" without resorting to a comic, cartoon-like characterization." Value Points: exceptionally rare Schoenhut ensemble group includes many rare animals from their first production period.
