23 (58 cm.) Poured wax head with portrait-like aristocratic features and pose,slender oval face with pronounced lower chin,aquiline-shaped nose,blue enamel eyes with heavy eyelids,painted eyeliner and brows,closed mouth with painted and glazed lips,tacked on blonde wig of fine soft hemp or silk,with attached waist-length braids at the back with interwoven brown cord for decoration. Her body is slender armature wrapped with homespun linen and covered with white muslin,a protruding hemp-wrapped dowel at the neck serves to attach the head,her hands are simplistic hand-stitched glove-style,and her feet are wooden shoe-molds. The doll is wearing her multi-layered original costume comprising a homespun chemise,homespun dickey with ink-lettered Mme Durr-Arnold,stockings,quilt-patterned silk petticoat,modified panier,fabric-hand-stitched shoes with silk bows and wooden heels that are made to exactly fit the wooden feet,two-piece silk gown with intricately constructed bodice,and unusual ribbon-trimmed sleeves,velvet throat band,black beaded coiffe,a bec interwoven into coiffure and crowned with an elaborate gilded and pearl coronet that matches her elaborate gilded necklace. Condition: generally excellent,typical wax rubs,body and costume are impeccably preserved. Comments: French,late 18th century,the poup?e was discovered in a chateau near Strasbourg,France,the site at which Maria Antoinette entered France from her native Austria to become Queen; the costume is of her era,and the doll bears an uncanny resemblance to the young Queen suggesting it was,at the least,inspired by the event. The ink-lettered name Mme Durr-Arnold is a mystery. Value Points: an extraordinary doll with regal presence,superb portraiture,and outstanding original costume,wig,coiffe and shoes.

Pale bisque swivel head on kid-edged shoulder plate with distinctive plump facial modeling and strong throat,defined double chin and characteristic throat hollow at top of shoulder plate,painted eyes in deeply-set sockets with outlined heavy eyelids,characteristic decorative glaze at lower eyes,painted lashes,lightly-feathered brows,accented nostrils and eye corners,closed mouth with pale daintily-accented lips,unpierced ears,strawberry-blonde human hair over cork pate arranged in a stylized topknot,gutta-percha fully-articulated body with jointing at shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,and wearing a stunning ice-blue silk dress with cream pencil-stripe design,scalloped edging and feather-stitched embroidery,ivory silk ribbons,over sous-sleeves,with undergarments,classic Huret heeled shoes with darker sole rims and an impressed block mark,and turquoise bead necklace with opaline cross. Condition: generally excellent,typical repairs to gutta-percha body. Marks: Medaille d'Argent Huret,22 Boulevd Montmartre Paris Expos. Univers. 1867. Comments: Adelaide Huret,circa 1863,the doll served as inspiration for the heroine Deruchette of Victor Hugo's novel,Travailleurs de la Mer,was then gifted by Victor Hugo to the daughter of his dear friend Alfred Asseline (who named her "The Great Man's Doll"),and finally,in 1872,after the Hugo family's return to Paris from exile,she was presented to his grand-daughter Jeanne after a re-freshening visit to the Huret ateliers where the body was restored,a kid label with the 1867 Exposition label affixed,and beautiful additions made to the trousseau. The doll remained among Jeanne's belongings most of her life,and was then gifted to her god-daughter in whose family the doll remained until the present time. A more detailed story of the doll is given in an appendix at the end of this catalog. Value Points the extraordinary provenance concerning the man whom many consider France's finest poet/writer is only enhanced by the exceptional beauty of this Huret doll. In addition,the poupee owns an extensive trousseau,once cherished by Jeanne Hugo,as attested by the linen-covered wooden doll trunk which bears the brass name plate of "Jeanne". The costumes comprise seven additional dresses and gowns of couturier quality from the early/mid 1860 era,and one superb silk fashion gown from the 1872 era that bears the Huret stamp on the inside waist (according to The Huret Book by Francois Theimer,labeled Huret costumes from this era were special commission only,suggesting the gown had been ordered by Victor Hugo for his granddaughter's doll). There are also two pique petticoats and a half slip that have the Huret stamp,and nine other finely-made undergarments. Other signed Huret accessories include bone folding fan in box labeled Huret,hat box labeled Huret containing two silk flowers and a blue woven bonnet signed Huret,pressed flannel bonnet. and a green-edged white box with Huret stamp containing a hankie embroidered "H". Other accessories include: black silk and lace coiffe,stiffened-braid bonnet with green feathers,two metal-handled parasols (one black silk with ivory tips,and one painted yellow with unusual silk cover and ivory tips),miniature rare blue opera glasses (one brass rim missing) with Stanhope image of Rouen and a drawing of Jeanne (symbol of France) in the manner of Hugo's illustrations,leather purse with tiny lock of baby hair,finely-woven silk snood,needlepoint slippers,knit fingerless gloves with blue silk ribbons,wooden egg,lambswool muff in original green box,wooden game box with cards and dice,gilt metal crown,leather cased necessaire with bone awl and needlecase and tiny gilded scissors,little book,very fine handmade lace coiffe and veil,silk pillow with woven design "Souvenir de L'Exposition 1878",and a fine porcelain tea service in its original box. Also included is a first edition of the 1885 memoirs,Victor Hugo Intime,by Alfred Asseline,detailing the early history of the poupee,and a hand-written letter by Micheline Cullin of Paris,the final family owner of the doll,relating more details of the doll and its history.

Condition: generally excellent,body sturdy and clean,hands perfect. Marks: Bru Jne 12 (head and body). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru,circa 1885. Value Points: an outstanding example of the luxury bebe with superb sculpting,bisque and painting,and wonderfully preserved. From the private collection of Anne Rice,the doll is described by her as "the star of my collection,inspiring the description in the novel Taltos of the the French doll given by the hero Ashlar to the Mayfair family". In the novel,the doll is described as "his Bru,his princess,his French beauty...a bisque doll of impeccable standards." Accompanying the doll is a an autographed of Anne Rice with the doll,as well as a copy of the novel,Taltos. The doll also appears on the back cover of Interview with the Vampire.

Pressed bisque shoulder head with very plump modeling of cheeks and well-defined chin,painted blue eyes with shaded coloring,well-defined eye sockets with thickly-lined upper eyelids,glazed detail at pupils and lower irises,painted all-around lashes,lightly feathered brows,accented eye corners,pointy-shaped nose with nostril accents,sculpted philtrum,closed mouth modeled to appear as though slightly open with outlined lips and two rows of painted tiny teeth,sculpted unpierced ears,blonde lambswool wig over cork pate,gutta percha body with dowel jointing at shoulders,elbows,hips and knees,curled fingers and kid collarette,wearing original costume of black taffeta with black bead trim,white batiste blouse,black velvet and lace cap,undergarments,stockings,heeled slippers signed C.C. Condition: generally excellent,some typical repairs to gutta percha body although overall very sturdy. Marks: (Huret signature on kid collarette). Comments: the doll has been attributed to Adelaide Huret,circa 1855,a sole existing example of her foray into creation of a poupee with characterized expression,and this attribution continues as most likely,although in his book,The Panorama of French Dolls,Theimer hypotheses its maker as Parisian George Most,circa 1860,noting that only two other examples by Most are known to exist. The poupee was a blue ribbon award winner at UFDC and was featured on the cover of Doll News in Spring 1997,and also on the cover of Lady Dolls of the 19th Century by Florence Theriault. Value Points: the extreme rarity and mystery of the poupee is rivalled only by her compelling portraiture and superb quality of bisque,signed Huret body and outstanding original costum

55"h. x 38"w. x 16 1/2"d. A three-story six-room wooden dollhouse with original cream/grey painted finish to suggest stone has a steepled-roof with small door opening to an attic,and double stack chimneys. There are two large "wall" panels at the front that hinge open for exhibit,and heavy cast handles for carrying at the sides. Each room has one large four-paneled floor-to-ceiling window at the back. The house has six rooms,two on each floor,and a center hallway on the ground floor. An unusually wide doorway with cast-hinged door is between the rooms on each floor. Each room is richly furnished,as follows: Top left: silk wallpaper with matching silk draperies having fringe and tassel trim; luxury ebony-finished furniture from Badeuille with gilt paper appliques to simulate bronze,comprising credenza,piano,table,settee and four chairs with original upholstery; fireplace with gilded tin pressed mirror and crystal and gilt metal chandelier. Top right: textured wallpaper with velvet fringed draperies,having a matching chandelier to opposite room,and furnished with a faux-marble fireplace below a mirror,high canopy bed with matching table,and four chairs,and jardiniere,paper mache portable stove,and various accessories. Middle floor left: silk wallpaper with silk draperies having fringed edging,silver chandelier,fireplace with faux-bamboo gilt metal mirror,another matching mirror,sofa and four chairs with raised carving details and leather seats,four various cupboards and tables,and various accessories including mirrors,birdcage,candlesticks. Middle floor right: textured wallpaper and parquet-patterned paper floor,with silk draperies,fireplace with mirror,and furnished with an early set of Biedemeier faux-rosewood bed and washstand,lady's writing desk,table and five chairs,sewing table,superb mirror-front armoire,and various gilded soft metal pieces including rocking chair,towel bar and letter holder. Ground floor left: kitchen with various cupboards,stove,table,bench,and a multitude of cooking pots,dishes,and utensils. Ground floor right and hallway: richly-patterned paper floor,the room containing fireplace and mirror along with a set of Badeuille furnishings with natural finish decorated with decoupage designs and gilt edging,comprising pianoforte,cupboard,fernery,table,settee and four chairs that are covered with unusual luxury mauve velvet,and ormolu accessories.Very good/excellent condition,no restoration or re-work of any kind,some typical minor play wear to small pieces,some water damage to corner sections of silk wall paper. The house and contents are sold as found from the garret of their home on Rue Joseph Bara in the 6th arrondissement of Paris where they have been preserved by their original family owners,the Hecht family,for well more than a century,offering a charming "moment in time" vision of an opulent late 19th century Parisian home.

A wooden-framed base labeled Humpty-Dumpty circus encloses the center ring,and supports a white circus tent with balancing bars,Humpty-Dumpty Circus lettering,and a gala garland of 22 flag banners. A number of performers are included: Ringmaster and Hobo,bisque-head lion tamer,two brown-hair bisque acrobats,one brown hair bisque-head lady acrobat,and six various clowns (bisque heads excellent,other heads fair/good condition,costumes fair/very good). Glass-eyed animals include poodle with cloth mane and tail; elephant with blanket and headpiece,tail,tusks,trunk and ears; tiger with tail and ears; donkey with tail and ears,and zebra with tail and ears. Painted eye animals include: leopard with tail; sea lion with original leather flippers; elephant with tail,trunk,tusks,and both ears; buffalo with carved mane,tail and horns; brown bear with ears and short tail; deer with ears,tail and one antler; ostrich; tiger with tail; lion; giraffe with ears and tail; 7"tall brown horse with partial bridle,stirrups included but not attached,and with ears and tail; 5" tall brown horse; white horse with bridle,platform with fringe,tail and ears; brown donkey with mane,ears (one torn) and tail.
