July 9, 2006 in Dallas, TX

Scenes from the Court teasingly word-plays on the court theme, while offering a plentitude of dolls that are fit for a princess. There are the exceptionally rare pair of dolls actually from the 18th century French court whose purpose was not child's play, but a manner for aristocrats to theatrically spread the latest gossip without naming names, from the private collection of the late Parisian antiquarian Claude Detave. There are wooden dolls of the English court, and even an extensive trousseaux. 8.5" x 11". Softbound. 136 full-color pages.

Extremely Rare French Porcelain Exhibition Busts of SFBJ Models

Extremely Rare French Porcelain Exhibition Busts of SFBJ Models

Lot #60

13" (33 cm.) Each pressed bisque head has brown sculpted hair casually swept across the forehead and behind the ears, with details of hair waves overall, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted brown lashes, feathered brows, accented  nostrils, closed mouth modeled as though open, and is mounted on original plinth with characteristic Sevres porcelain cobalt blue color. One depicts the crying 233 model of SFBJ and is remarkable for deeply sculpted crying crinkles around the eyes and mouth and shaded detail of lips and tongue; the other has gentle smiling expression enhanced by sculpted indentations around the eyes and dimpled lip corners and philtrum. Condition: generally excellent. Comments:  SFBJ, with some possible connection to Sevres Porcelain which was involved in the Renaissance of the French Doll movement during the 1912 era when the busts were likely made. The busts represented character models from the French 19th century children's storybook figures "Jean qui Rit"  and "Jean qui Pleure" which had been popularized in various statuary pieces for decades. The large size and hand-pressed detail indicate the pieces were made as Exhibition pieces and the glass eyes indicate that were intended as actual models of the 1912  SFBJ character doll models 233 and 235.  Value Points: the extraordinary hand-pressed pair are believed to be one-of-kind. They are featured in the book The Beautiful Jumeau by Florence Theriault.

Exceptionally Rare and Beautiful "Bebe Gourmand" by Leon Casimir Bru

Exceptionally Rare and Beautiful "Bebe Gourmand" by Leon Casimir Bru

Lot #82

18" (46 cm.) Pressed bisque swivel head with very full cheeks and strong throat, on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate with modeled bosom and shoulder-blades, amber brown glass enamel inset eyes with spiral threading, thick dark eye-liner encircles the eye sockets, painted lashes, rose blushed eye shadow, delicately feathered brows, accented eye corners and  nostrils, open mouth with shaded and accented lips, porcelain tongue inside the head set in framework allowing the long tongue to be "stuck out" to receive biscuit and then tip backward as though swallowing, firmly stuffed bebe torso and upper legs, kid upper arms, bisque forearms with exquisitely sculpted hands, bisque lower legs from above the knee, bisque feet with open soles. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (circle/dot symbol on head) Bte SGDG (forehead) 1 T (right shoulder) (original paper label on torso). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, his Bebe Gourmand, first advertised by Bru in 1882 as "delicieux bebe a surprise"; although he described the bebe as a registered model no record of its depose has been found. The bebe has two hollow tubes hidden inside the torso, and when a tiny biscuit is placed on the tongue, it falls backward as though being swallowed, falls through one of the tubes, and comes out through one of the open foot soles. Value Points: exceptionally rare, few models are known to exist, this being an early 1882 model and in superb original condition, with outstanding quality of bisque and sculpting especially notable in hands and muscular legs, choicest bisque and complexion. The bebe has its original blue silk dress, blue stockings, and original unique signed Bru shoes with "trap-door" opening in the soles to re-capture the "digested" biscuit.

The Extremely Rare Musical Bebe Modele by Leon Casimir Bru

The Extremely Rare Musical Bebe Modele by Leon Casimir Bru

Lot #84

16" (41 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with highly defined modeling of cheeks and mouth, brown glass enamel inset eyes with spiral threading, painted eye-liner around the eye sockets, painted lashes and feathered brows, rose-blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with shaded and accented lips, definition of painted teeth between the lips, pierced ears, antique hand-tied human hair wig over original lambswool cap and cork pate, all-wooden fully-articulated bebe body with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, shapely wooden torso which is hollow and contains a musical mechanism that operates from the winding key at torso back, original white pique dress, undergarments, straw bonnet, maroon stockings, black leather shoes signed Bru Jne Paris. Marks: Bte SGDG (forehead) 112 (impressed on back torso). Condition: generally excellent, original body finish albeit scuffed, musical mechanism functions well. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1882, the concept of a musical wooden-bodied doll had first been deposed by Bru in 1872 as his "surprise poupee" in which a keywind Geneva musical box was contained in the torso of a wooden-bodied lady doll. Then in 1883 Bru offered the "surprise bebe", a keywind musical version of Bebe Modele; it was mentioned in his advertising for one year only and can be presumed never to have been put into production except on special order. Value Points: beautiful Bru bebe with very fine modeling, rare painted teeth, rare Bebe Modele wooden body, and extremely rare "surprise" musical box in torso with very fine quality music box. Few models are known to exist.
