The doll is being sold from its original family estate in Rouen,France, where it has resided for 150 years, along with her trunk and trousseau; Rouen, curiously,is near DÞAvranches,France in which the famous poupee,Blondinette, with her trunk and trousseau were located. Extremely Important French Bisque Exhibition Doll as Tsar Alexander III in Original Costume

Extremely Important French Bisque Exhibition Doll as Tsar Alexander III in Original Costume

Lot #56

26" (66 cm.) Bisque socket head, deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, thick black eyeliner, painted lashes,brush-stroked and multi-feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate,French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 11 (and artist checkmarks on head) Bebe Jumeau Diplome hÞHonneur (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1892,the doll represents the Russian Tsar Alexander III in full regalia costume at the time of the signing of the Franco-Russian Alliance in 1892. In his commission to create the important historical figure,Jumeau chose to use a head one size smaller than the body, thus achieving a more realistic "adult" proportion. It is not certain if the costume was created in the Jumeau atelier or by custom uniform tailors; the workmanship and tailoring is exceptional, from the military cap to the miniature perfectly-detailed shoulder epaulets. The costume includes a white shirt (front with tiny narrow tucks),black silk tie, heavy black woolen double-breasted jacket with wide lapels, gold stripes and epaulets, black leather belt with lionÞs head buckles, leather sword scabbard, green woolen trousers, black leather custom shoes with pointed toes, cobbler soles and heels and impressed 12. The jacket is liberally decorated with brass buttons and five "diamond" star-shaped emblems with centering "emerald" or "alexandrite" stones. A gilt emblem decorates the cap,and the appropriately-scaled sword is of fine craftsman quality. It is uncertain if the doll was unique,or one of a small series created for French and Russian dignitaries at this historical event; nevertheless this is the one example known to still exist. Value Points: very rare doll of historical significance,in a perfectly-preserved state, having been in the possession of the original family owners since its making.

Large French Musical Automaton "Flower Seller with Surprises: by Gustav Vichy

Large French Musical Automaton "Flower Seller with Surprises: by Gustav Vichy

Lot #153

25" (64 cm.) Portraying an adult lady, posed upon a golden-brown velvet-covered wooden platform is a Papier-mache lady with rich black complexion, brown glass eyes, articulated eyelids, slightly parted lips with double row of teeth, black mohair wig, carton torso and legs, and Papier-mache hands; she is posed slightly-leaning forward as though offering the vibrant flowers presented in her decorated market tray. Yet when the mechanism is wound and activated, the surprise is revealed. Alternately, each of the three flowers lifts from its hinged back to display a treasure beneath: in one is a Papier-mache monkey who turns his head side to side, blinks his eyes, and "chatters" by opening and closing his mouth; in the second in a little bisque girl who twirls around dancing; and in the third is a white mouse who circles and circles, chasing his tail. Meanwhile the flower seller, herself, adorned in a richly costume of silks and velvets (despite having bare feet!) nods her head and blinks her eyes in a realistic manner, and two different tunes play. There are 11 different movements. Condition: generally excellent, functions well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1885,he created several different variation of the "surprise" theme, this being one of the most lavish. Value Points: rare automaton with wonderful movements, surprises and music, with exceptional quality including superbly-modeled womanÞs face, intricate detail of little surprises.

Very Rare French Brown-Complexioned Art Character as Marquis by Van Rozen
Very Rare Set of Four German Bisque "Helmet Googlies" by Max Handwerck

Very Rare Set of Four German Bisque "Helmet Googlies" by Max Handwerck

Lot #339

11" (28 cm.) Each has bisque socket head with sculpted cap or helmet over sculpted hair, glass inset googly eyes, painted brows and lashes,button-shaped mouth, closed mouth with beaming smile, composition and wooden ball-jointed body and is wearing antique-style costume or uniform to enhance their depiction. Condition: generally excellent, bodies are appropriately-styled but are not original. Comments: Max Handwerck, circa 1916,from a curious and rare series that combined the popular googly phenomena of the era, with the WWI historical events; his googly model was issued with a variety of different bisque hats or helmets to indicate the involved nations,in this case, the United States as Uncle Sam (marked Dep Elite U.S. 1) with sculpted stars and stripe hat and having brown hair; Germany (marked Dep Elite D. 1) with sculpted green eagle helmet with sculpted light brown hair; Japan (marked Dep Elite J 2/0) with sculpted cap and black hair; and Turkish (marked Dep Elite O.T. 2/0) with curious double face (one with red cap and black hair indicating Eastern allegiance, and one with green brimmed cap and brown hair indicating Western alliance). The series was likely never marketed in 1916 as the combination of happy googly designs with war figures was really a poor marketing decision, and not until the 1950s was a warehouse stock of the heads located in Germany, never having been assembled with bodies, nor distributed at the time of production. Evidently, too, very few of the heads were ever made because they are very rare. Value Points: rare googly models, virtually never found as an assembled set, including rare double-faced Turkish model.
