Outstanding French Bisque Poupee by Adelaide Huret with Signed Huret Shoes

Lot #31

17" (43 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, very full cheeks and rounded face, heavily-modeled eyelids, painted blue down-gazing eyes with decorative glaze at lower edge, dark eyeliner, painted all-around lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, unpierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, gutta percha poupee body with shapely torso, dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Poupee Brevete S.G.D.G. Comments: Adelaide Huret, circa 1861, with deposed rare blown leather body by Clement; and with a locking mechanism at swivel neck which was deposed by Huret in 1861, designed to prevent the head from swiveling totally around in an unrealistic manner. Value Points: the beauty of the early doll, with flawless bisque, sculpting and painting, is further enhanced by rare body and original shoes Huret a Paris. The doll is offered from the private collection of the noted couturiere Louise Hedrick of Wisconsin along with a hand-stitched trousseau of costumes including white pique dress with red soutache embroidery with matching cape and hood; Swiss dress of sheer antique cotton muslin with white chemisette and blue straw fanchon bonnet; silk ivory ensemble with aqua braid trim and matching felt hat; summer dress of delicate flower-patterned muslin with ruffled bretelles; ivory cotton dress with lace fichu in the Marie Antoinette style; and purple silk dress with white soutache embroidery, detachable lappets, white chemisette and matching purple bonnet. The costumes were created by Louise Hedrick of antique fabrics from the original patterns presented in La Poupee Modele, 1865 era. Included is the book A French Fashion Doll's Wardrobe. Patterns 1864-1874 by Louise Hedrick. Private collection of Louise Hedrick, ex-collection of Peggy Lancaster.

Very Fine Mid-18th Century English Wooden Doll in Original Costume

Very Fine Mid-18th Century English Wooden Doll in Original Costume

Lot #35

17" (43 cm.) All-carved wooden doll with one-piece head and torso, well-defined chin and throat, carved detail of ears, inset black enamel eyes, all-around dot painted lashes, single-stroke brows with dot highlight edging, strong nose, closed mouth with kindly-set lips, original facial complexion with cheek blush spots, original wig with rolled curls at the side and captured back hair in black ribbon, cloth upper arms, wooden lower arms with fork-shaped fingers, simply-carved wooden legs with dowel-jointing at hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: English, mid-1700s, the doll closely resembles the famous wooden doll known as Letitia Penn, and may have originated from that same English work shop. Value Points: very fine original condition of the early doll with excellent detail of painting, wearing original aristocratic costume highlighted by an ivory silk jacket with very fine gold and purple embroidery, silk covered buttons, and even tiny embroidered flowers on the background fabric, and with yellow silk vest, ruffled jabot, pants, woven stockings and tapestry woven slippers with leather soles. The doll is preserved in original wooden box with an additional tricorn hat, black hair ribbons, tiny lacquer snuff box, and several family papers including an early hand-lettered invoice from Wm. Tayler "Clothier, Tailor & Breeches Maker" at Cavendish Square from which the gentleman's costume may have been commissioned.

Early French Porcelain Poupee by Adelaide Huret, Trunk and Extensive Trousseau

Early French Porcelain Poupee by Adelaide Huret, Trunk and Extensive Trousseau

Lot #100

17" (43 cm.) Porcelain shoulderhead with plump rounded face, pale blue eyes with darker blue outer rims in downcast pose, thick painted upper lashes, painted lower lashes, accented eye corners, lightly-feathered brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with accent touches on lips, unpierced ears, blonde lambswool wig over cork pate, kid gusset-jointed plump enfantine body, porcelain arms to above the elbows. Condition: there is a very faint line (firing?) on the left side shoulderplate, left thumb repaired. Comments: Adelaide Huret, circa 1857, a label on the doll torso is from Au Calife de Bagdad, the doll shop at 14 Rue de Choiseul, a short distance in the 9th Arr. from the Huret firm located at 25 Rue Lazare at this time; it is possible the original gutta percha body was replaced with this sturdier body during the early 1860 era, along with adding to the luxurious trousseau of the poupee. Value Points: the beautiful poupee is wearing fine early costume (unsigned but possible Huret) with matching lavender velvet net snood. The doll is the owner of a large multi-layered trunk with original label of mid-1800s Parisian trunk maker Roquancourt Bolle and contains an extensive 1860s era trousseau: seven silk or cotton dresses or ensembles, five blouses, silk skirt, seven petticoats, three chemises, two white cotton smocks, three night shifts, five full slips, five pantalets, four various woven wraps, six pairs of footwear, eight cotton bonnets with lace or embroidered detail, three snoods, eight other velvet or woven hats, lidded basket and two woven hammocks. Private Collection Kathryn DeFillipo.

Very Rare French Bisque Portrait Lady by Alexandre Dehors

Very Rare French Bisque Portrait Lady by Alexandre Dehors

Lot #142

18" (46 cm.) Perfectly oval-shaped bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate with delicately modeled bosom, deposed Dehors neck attachment allowing the head to tilt forward and lean coquettishly from side to side (rather than simply swivel), slightly elongated throat, high domed forehead, high cheekbones, almond shaped cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner encircles the eye sockets, modeled eyelids, lightly feathered brows and lashes, aquiline nose, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with upturned lip corners and accented lips, shaped chin with centered dimple, defined philtrum, well defined unpierced ears, blonde mohair wig with braided coronet and applique floral trim, kid poupee body, gusset jointed hips and knees, kid upper arms, bisque arms from above the elbows with separately sculpted fingers, defined knuckles and nails, separate thumb, (frail) original golden silk gown with fringe trim, undergarments, shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Alexandre Dehors, circa 1866, his brevete model created for presentation at the 1867 Paris International Exposition was designed to compete against the Huret style poupee; in fact, the Exposition jury declared the unique neck articulation of the Dehors doll was "an extra not found in Huret dolls". Further, the facial resemblance to the beloved Empress Eugenie is remarkable, indicating that the model may have been created specifically for that Exposition, which was the crowning showpiece of the Napoleon III epoch. Value Points: very rare doll with original body, bisque hands, original wig, unique articulation, and exquisite portraiture.

Exceptionally Rare Grand French Bisque Bebe Jumeau, Incised Depose Marks, Size 20

Exceptionally Rare Grand French Bisque Bebe Jumeau, Incised Depose Marks, Size 20

Lot #319

42" (107 cm.) Bisque socket head, deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, lushly-painted lashes, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, blushed eye shadow, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with shaded lips, separately-modelled pierced ears, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with plump limbs, beautiful antique costume, undergarments, bonnet, and Jumeau leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent, light retouch on body finish. Marks: Depose Jumeau 20 (incised marking on head, and artist checkmarks) Bebe Jumeau Diplome d'Honneur (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1884, the largest size created of his bebe, this example being the rare incised "Depose" model, being the first time his name appeared on the bebe head. It is probable that the doll was created as an exhibition model, appearing either at the Antwerp Exposition of 1885 where Jumeau competed fiercely against German competitors who were copying his dolls, or in the 1884 salon of the French Union des Fabricantsde Jouets, of which Jumeau was a charter member and which provided a Paris showroom for French dolls and toys. Value Points: exceptional rarity of the size 20 bebe, no other example in this size with the incised "Depose" marking is known to exist, with gorgeous bisque and painting, and with original signed Jumeau shoes, marked size 20, with gilt letter markings.
