18" (46 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass inset eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, arched brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with slightly upturned pale accented lips in hint of smile, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, kid-over-wooden body with shapely torso, dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, bisque lower arms, kid collarette, lovely antique ensemble, undergarments, leather boots. Condition: there is restoration on lower front neck (under costume), few fingers restored on left hand. Marks: 4 (head and shoulder) A La Poupee de Nuremberg 21 Rue de Choiseul Lavalle-Peronne... (paper label on torso). Comments: Lily, the signature doll from the prestigious doll shop of Madame Lavalle-Peronne as described in the journal La Poupee Modele, circa 1867, the doll became the classic size and model of French poupees throughout the 1867-1875 era. Value Points: historical importance of the doll, this example with original paper label, is enhanced by its facial beauty, original labeled body, fine antique costume and original wig, and with original trunk bearing the Lavalle-Peronne label on inside lid. Also included is an original 4" x 2 1/2" miniature 1865 Journal de Poupees booklet with color engraving of the dolls and description of the doll costumes and accessories.

Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, delicate complexion, large blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes and lightly feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with pale accented lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig captured with knit snood interwoven with blue ribbons, softly-stuffed kid poupee body, kid over wooden upper arms and lower thighs, bisque lower arms and lower legs, bare feet. Condition: generally excellent, some restoration on fingers. Comments: Leontine Rohmer, circa 1860, with rare body style including bisque bare feet. Value Points: exceptionally beautiful petite poupee, wearing sheer dimity gown with pleated ruffles, undergarments, ankle boots, and lovely earrings and ormolu jewelry. Included with the doll is her original trunk filled with extensive trousseau comprising seven additional gowns, extensive undergarments, jackets, night shifts, woven stockings, bonnets, hat boxes, bone-handled parasol, toiletries, wooden marble top dressing table with mirror, miniature book titled "Angel Lilly", a sepia engraving of child playing with doll titled "Miss Lilly's First Walk", and miniature stationery engraved Mademoiselle Lilly. Provenance: the doll was acquired by Karen Rockwell early in her collecting life along with a photograph taken of the doll and her belongings by the previous owner; that photograph is included with the doll. For many years, Karen Rockwell shared the doll, which she had named Miss Lily, with other collectors at UFDC annual conventions including a special exhibit at the 1995 convention titled "Remember the Ladies".

Important American Wooden Doll "Elmer" Created for the Film "On Golden Pond" with Provenance

19" (48 cm.) Included are two wooden dolls created by artist Michael Langton for the 1981 film "On Golden Pond", including very roughly carved wooden doll with original deep split in face and scuffed finish, and more finely carved wooden doll with well-defined features. The second doll, which is chip carved of darkened wood, has swivel neck and swivel waist, and crude jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, well-defined fingers and shoes, carved facial features, scruffy short hair, and is wearing original wool sailor costume. Condition: generally excellent as made. Marks: To Elmer with love and thanks, Michael Langton (ink script on back torso) Best wishes from your creator (ink script on front torso with initials, and painted red heart). Comments: the storyline of the 1981 film "On Golden Pond" required a wooden doll that the star Katherine Hepburn had played with as a child; Michael Langton was commissioned to create the doll based upon pencil sketch and notes created by the director Stephen Grimes which included the deep split in face; the first attempt by Langton was judged too simplistic and a second attempt commissioned by Grimes produced the doll actually used in the film. Those are the dolls offered here, acquired from the artist in 2004 by the Rosalie Whyel Museum (not to be confused with later limited edition replicas created by Langton). Value Points: important one of a kind artist doll with provenance by renowned artist Michael Langton, 1980, the collection includes both wooden dolls, the original sketch by Stephen Grimes, historical notes by Langton, and other memorabilia.

Bisque socket head with highly-artistic sculpting achieved by a unique four-part mold used only for this doll, prominent definition of facial planes, softly-rounded nose, heart-shaped face with elongated slender throat, blue glass paperweight eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted dark curly lashes, feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with petulantly-shaped lips, well-modeled pierced ears, original brunette human hair hand-tied wig, uniquely modeled body with elongated tapered-shape torso, wide hips, undefined waist, composition upper arms, bisque lower arms with bisque attached-ball-joints at the elbows, separately sculpted fingers, wide upper thighs, elongated lower legs with shapely calves, elongated narrow feet. Condition: generally excellent, a barely perceptible line (likely original firing line) extends the vertical length of the throat. Marks: A. Marque (incised signature on doll) Margaine-Lacroix (cloth label on costume). Comments: France, circa 1916, the artistic doll was commissioned from and sculpted by the esteemed French sculptor, Albert Marque for 1916 exhibition presented by Parisian art patron, Margaine-Lacroix in her fashion boutique. The dolls were presented in costumes of one of three major themes, historical French costumes, French court persons, and Russian folklore, this being the latter theme. Value Points: the rare and important art doll, considered the apogee of the French doll Renaissance movement of the early 1900s, is wearing original folklore style costume with richly embroidered details and symbols bearing Margaine-Lacroix label, leather shoes with Alart symbol, and elaborate berry-trimmed coronet.
